emigration... is that really my only option??!!

Aug 14 13:42

Ok so i aint been here in a while...... And i'm in a much different situation these days. Basically I finished the third year on my geology degree in may, and I passed, but didn't do well enough to get into my final year, and in UCD that means I just get a general BSc degree (as opposed to an honours one) and there's no way i can repeat the year which is so so annoying! The most annoying thing is that if i'd completely failed the year altogether i could have repeated.... Anyway, so now I've started to look for a geology job here in Ireland, along with the other 6 people in my class in the same situation as me. (there were 14 of us in the class in only 7 of us got into 4th year...) And so far we've not had alot of luck. It seems no geology company over here wants to take graduates with a general degree, and only one of us has been employed over here because her dad knew the owner of the company. The only offer we've had is from a company in Australia.... a couple have people have gone over there already and are absolutely loving working over there, so i'm contemplating it. But is moving to Australia really my only option??!! I havemn't started looking in the UK yet so i'm hoping to have more luck there. At the moment I'm working in Specsavers.... (a girls gotta eat.....) but i'm hoping to find a geology job to get experience n then do a masters.... sure we'll see anyway!!

Oz is hot

Laura

It is a good time for geology jobs at the moment (compared to the last several years) but Oz appears to be particularly hot at the moment, I know several graduates who have just got jobs there. The mining / minerals industry is particularly strong as is hydrogeology apparently.

Some websites that might help
Working Smart specialises in job opportunities for geoscience and engineering graduates.

Earthworks is the other main earth science jobs site

Monarch
also have a specialism in geology

If you are interested in Australia you could also try
Training Express ... these also have an Irish Office in Co. Meath

Good luck with the job hunt

Have you tried the ground

Have you tried the ground investigation firms? They'd probably take you on as a geologist / geotechnical engineer and provide training in terms of logging to recognised standards (not covered during my degree course).

I'm not sure of the big Irish GI companies but Soil Mechanics, Geotechnics Ltd, Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Soils are among the bigger ones in the UK. (I don't work for any of them!)

Once you've got your foot in the door it's easier to move onwards and upwards.
