The review process

The submission process is based on the peer-review process used when publishing scientific articles. Only some content is reviewed in this way:

  • Tutorials
  • Articles

Images and glossary entries are checked by a reviewer, but do not undergo a review process. In addition, links are checked for obvious spam content, but the scientific accuracy of the site being linked to is not checked.

The process involved at least one reviewer. The editor will check a review, but unless there is a serious issue, will not make any further comment.
Tutorials and articles are reviewed by one reviewer and the site editor. In some cases an additional reviewer will be sought where there is disagreement. If the three independent reviews still do not agree, the editor's decision is final.
A review has four possible outcomes:

  • Published without changes - this is rare but means the article/tutorial is published immediately
  • Published with minor changes - this is the most common outcome as this includes fixing of typographic errors and minor re-wordings for clarity as well as ensuring scientific accuracy. The reviewer and/or editor may make some of these changes for you. However, you must carry out the rest before the work is published. You will have 6 weeks to do the changes. If you do not, the material may be edited and submitted to the site under the authorship of "GeologyRocks", which means you would lose the points gained. You may argue against changes if you feel they are unjustified by contacting the site editor.
  • Rejected - this means that the content as submitted is not of a high enough level for GeologyRocks, but is of the right kind of material. However, the work requires substantial effort and or work to bring it up to standard. Some suggestions will be provided by the reviewer. You will have 6 weeks to download a copy of the page before it is deleted.
  • Rejected and not suitable - the means the work submitted is simply not suitable for inclusion on GeologyRocks. The work will be deleted within 2 weeks of submission

You will receive the review via email which contains a PDF file. The reviewers name is removed from the final report. Feel free to contact the site editor if you have any concerns.

If the site editor feels the material is not worth review, they may delete the content immediately. However, this is extremely rare. Please contact the site owner if you have any concerns.

Please note that the site editor's decision on content is final. We want as much material as possible on GeologyRocks so that the whole community benefits. However, this material must be of high quality and scientifically accurate in order to be useful. Do not be offended in any way if your material is rejected or requires changes. The process used ensures this quality and is the norm in the scientific world.
