FAQ

What’s the point?

The point of GeologyRocks is to promote the Earth science; it’s meant to provide an online meeting place for amateur and professional geologists alike to meet and talk. It also provides an educational resource that is free for use and only requires an acknowledgement to the site.

Why don’t you use a wiki and let everyone contribute?

The problem with wikis is that anyone can contribute. If content that is wrong, biased or barely worded is published on the site, then it creates extra work to put it right and it needs to be put right quickly as it has been effectively “endorsed” by the site. We therefore took the decision to have a peer-review process for content. Only one author can create content but we can accommodate several articles on that same subject. We felt that this way we got the good things about a wiki (easily added content, content added via the web browser), but without the bad points.

Why did my content that I spent hours writing get rejected?

The peer-review process of GeologyRocks aims to uphold the quality of the content on the site. We appreciate the effort it takes to create content, but we refuse to publish content that does not meet our quality controls. Your review will have given your constructive criticism to improve the content you submitted; we would greatly appreciate it if you put in a bit more time and tried again.

Why did my forum post get deleted?

The simple answer to this is that a moderator felt the post was not suitable and deleted it. They will have contacted you to inform you of this. In some circumstances, a comment is deleted (which is not yours) and all replies to that comment are also deleted automatically (of which one might have been yours). If you feel strongly enough, let then us know and we’ll see what we can do.

Who are the moderators?

The moderators are a small group of people that have the responsibility to ensure that inappropriate content is not on the site. They can be recognised by the moderator badge which appears on their profiles and comments. They do not review material, but simply ensure the site rules are upheld at all times.

Who are the reviewers?

The reviewers are a small group of people who are qualified to review geological material. Reviewers are selected on a case-by-case basis, but we think they are qualified to critically assess material on the site.
