The piccies were taken by other people, usually professional cave photographers and I got to keep them. This was when I was the Cave Conservation Officer for Wales in 1980-95. There's got be some perks in the job...
woe is me for thinking Wookey Hole was the pinnacle of British Caving!
I should think so too. Wookey Hole is the pinnacle of British tackiness! I tended to get photos of formations since they are the most vulnerable. Often the piccies were taken within hours of a discovery, hence the pristine condition.
Here's another, Yorkshire this time. Anybody recognise it?
Well done Jenny! You don't get a large cash prize though ('cos I'm tight). You do however get the Gus Horsley Award For Outstanding Initiative By Reading The Little Thingy At The Top Of The Photo.
Here's one of a phreatic tube in Peak Cavern (Derbyshire):
ooh, I've been to Peak Cavern. I wasn't that impressed with it, to be honest, although I have only been in the 'General Public. bitr and I know it continues on for about 6 miles after that.
I did like the fake rocks though
Of the 3 that I've been to in Castleton, I would say that Treakcliffe was my fave.
Hey! I have fond childhood memories of Wookey Hole... who can fail to be scared by the evil Wookey Witch!? Or should that be scarred? Not to mention the similarity in name to a certain Star Wars character... Magic! 8)
I've been in some nasty situations underground in my time but by far the worst was at Wookey Hole. I couldn't tell what gender the guide was (neither could my wife) and I got told off for laughing when the guide pointed out the witch's dog. I got attacked by a squirrel outside. And that weird amusement arcade thing you have to go through to get out is the stuff of nightmares.
If you want to do a good show cave, you can't get any better than White Scar caves in Yorkshire, which culminates in:
Sorry! I just couldn't resist. That's what comes from watching 'Carry On Doctor' on a Sunday afternoon...
On a more serious note Gus, have you ever discovered any new species during your caving? Is there a latin binomial out there ending in gusus or horsleyii?
Mount Enos, highest point on Kefallonia taken from St Georges Castle:
EDIT = Realised 'afternoon' didn't require a capital A
No new species, but I did get an early look at niphargus glennei, a cave shrimp which has now been found in about 15 sites in the UK. It is only found in water which flows over stalagmite. I have found several miles of new cave in total which to me is more exciting by far. Not many people can claim to have seen something no other human ever has.

Excellent pictures. Did you take them with a normal camera? When I went to Carlsbad caverns all my cave pics came out black!

Wow, some great pics. We have some somewhere that we took on Lanzagrotty if I can find them... they're of albino crabs though, not rocks...

Don't tell me Gus, that's the first time that you would have been glad of the presence of Knockers underground!? Oooh Err Missus...

Very good Benauld. Although even with knockers I wouldn't have been sure. It had to be seen to be believed.
