Mississippi river crests as most severe is finished for Memphis

For the past few weeks, the Mississippi river has been flooding and battering the American south. Memphis, Tenn., has been inundated with heavy flooding, however the river has crested near the Music City, signifying the most detrimental is finished. That area can be safer, as the water will start to recede and flooding will subside. However, there are several other areas still at considerable risk.

Rock in Northern Cyprus

Towards the end of the panhandle on the mountain ridge sits a strange rock. My husband thinks it fell there, maybe during a  volcanic action, I think it's been pushed up. It has the most unusual colouring. The Greek call it red rock, the Turks call it yellow rock. It has a strong mostly red but also yellow marking, sometimes looking like 'Raspberry Ripple'

What can it be?

Getting near the end!

Hi All,

I haven't actually posted anything on the site in what is likely to be years, but I keep flicking in and out to see what topics come up.

I am nearling the end of my European Masters in Geotechnics and rock like stuffs. Not quite the pure geology I had aimed at when I started university nearly 3 and a half years ago, but thats life! Currently a month away from completing the EGEC, course which is in the Federation of European Mining Programs.

A Confused Rock - Your thoughts please on the age and mixed rock type !

Can you please help to identify the age and likely type of this confused rock outcrop that forms part of a property foundation seen in Spain [Betics]

The exposed face above is over 30 feet wide, 8-10 feet high, and 8-10 feet deep at least.  Shows vein compression and folding.

The next two picture are of the same rock as seen on the side and top. A very confused rock.

Your thoughts please...  Mike

Did the Continental Drift Create an Oil Bonanza?

More than 90 million years ago, when the land mass of Pangaea began separating into the continents we now call South America and Africa, the earth may have produced a lucrative farewell gift: huge oil and gas deposits along both coastlines where they had previously been joined. Now, Angus McCoss, exploration director and chief geologist at Tullow Oil, which in 2007 discovered one of the biggest oil finds of recent years off the coast of West Africa, is betting more than $100 million that a similar bonanza awaits off South America's eastern shore.

Help identifying fossil

Hi - I am new to this site, but today saw a fossil that I had not seen before, and wondered if anyone could tell me what it is.

I should have photographed something with it for scale, but the width was 75mm which would make the length about 300mm.

The shape was 4 parallel convex ridges, with narrow grooves between, but the overall was not curved, but flat.

Many thanks for any help
