Glacial Valley
  • Location: Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, UK
  • Date Taken (dd-mm-yy): 05-10-2008

Classic U-shaped valley in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. The valley occurs between the hard sill of Salisbury Crags and the volcanic remnants of Arthur's Seat. The softer cementstone group were scoured out.

U-shaped?

I hate to be picky, but I don't think that this is a classic U-shaped valley. These have more vertical sides and a flat base.

The inclined sides with flat base is more indicative of a glacial meltwater channel.

You're right in that it's

You're right in that it's not a "classic" valley. A case of over-enthusiasm on my part, I think Winking However, the valley was carved by a glacier. The sides are controlled by geology with Salisburys Crags to the left, dipping at 25° and Leonard's Sill on the right, forming two hard-to-erode sides. The flow of the glacier was from the front to the back of the picture (north to south) and was a deflection of the main glacier flowing from west to east. The deflection was caused by the Crags to the west (left).
