I'm currently buying in to the view that 'Atlantis' was actually bronze age Santorini. The location, geography, age and advancement of the civilisation all match quite well. Plus it did end in a catyclism (apologies on the spelling!).

Atlantis was probably just an allegory used in Plato's writings, which is the first recorded mention of it.
Of course it was real! Didn't you watch "Man from Atlantis"? God, did that show suck...............
