I suppose this might technically be geological but I thought I'd post it in here....

I've just found my engagement ring that had been lost for about 3 months. Where did I find it? In the washing machine, of course! :?

Anyway the problem I have is that the ring has got some white residue on it...which is either washing powder or limescale (remember it may have been in the washer for up to 3 months!)

Either way, I was going to try and clean it off by soaking the ring in white vinegar (that'll sort out the residue) but do you think that the vinegar will affect the gold or the diamond at all?

I don't think it will, but I don't want to risk damaging it or discolouring it, so I thought I'd ask people here Smiling face

So, what do you think?

Nope shouldn't cause any problems at all, the diamonds and gold are both inert. The only problem you may have is with the stone setting, some jewellers use jewellers cement (a type of glue) to help keep the stone in place. Even in the event that it does effect the setting, having the stone reset wont cost very much.

I've heard that coca-cola is also good at cleaning tarnished metals, again this shouldn't have any effect upon a diamond.

I did the same thing to my memory stick! but only there for 1 week. oops!
Had to take it apart, and used one of those small flathead screwdrivers to scrape the residue off. Then slap it in the computer and it worked! Didn't loose any data! that was a relief, because i had coursework on there! Smiling face
