The waves breaking near the junction of the lighter and darker water are breaking over Cades Reef. As with all barrier reefs, the reefs form on topographic highs and as such cause waves to break over them; dissipating energy and creating calmer water behind. Cades Reef is actually exposed along large sections of it (which is unusual). This was caused by a hurricane which lifted sediment onto the reef top. This of course, killed the corals on the reef top, but the rest of the reef is still healthy. The picture has been enhanced slightly to highlight the reef.
