strange rock

I found a strange rock is made of what appears to be soft clay, but it has many criss crossing thin hard layers some of wich appear to be hard rock. does anyone know what it could be and how it formed?

Couldn't tell you what it is exactly, but it looks like the rock has become fractured and mineral-bearing fluids have percolated along the cracks, depositing minerals along their way.
