Slimeball…a derogative term to be sure, from the modern usage, but before it was ever dragged down to the world of insults and verbal nastiness we know it for today, the scum of which we speak and the small bacteria that form them were simply the catalysts for the many beautiful colours we see in hot springs.

Nestled between the Aegean and Libyan Sea, Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, sits at the southern most tip of Europe, the crossroad of cultures, civilizations, East and West, Africa and Europe.

The islands of the Aegean are peaks of underwater mountains that extend out from the mainland. Crete is the last of this range and boasts a diverse beauty from its high mountains of Psiloritis, Lefka Ori, Dikti, to its ocean caressed pink sand beaches.

I have recently visited the Isle of Arran just off Scotland. Now i know most of you keen geologists will have been there before but to all those who haven'tI would like to emphasise how brilliant it is, there is so much to see there, but one let down, the Hutten's uncomformitty, the first one ever descovered, is rubbish

I found a strange rock is made of what appears to be soft clay, but it has many criss crossing thin hard layers some of wich appear to be hard rock. does anyone know what it could be and how it formed?

It's now only two weeks until my degree officially starts. I've made a start of the first book and am wrestling with some of the maths but it all seems very exciting at the moment. We'll see if this still the case in a couple of weeks/months/years time...
