Talk on "Geology on the WWW"

Hi, I'm giving a talk entitled: "Earth Science on the WWW" at the University of Edinburgh Geolosoc tomorrow lunchtime.

Some details can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=8269134317 and below.

Date: Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Location: Grant Institute, Main Lecture Theatre

Abstract:

The web is a wonderful place. You can access it 24/7 on any device from a mobile phone, to a games console to top-of-the range quad-core desktop machine with gigabytes of RAM. One of the objectives of the World Wide Web is to give free and unfettered access to the whole sphere of human knowledge. Can you really do this? What does the average person see when they search for terms that you and I as earth scientists take for granted? This talk is a whistle-stop tour of the best, worst and downright ugliest of the web for an earth science point of view. The problem of skewed, biased or blatantly wrong content is exacerbated by the advent of web 2.0: now anyone can publish anything, not just those with technical knowledge. Despite some of the questionable science available, there is hope! GeologyRocks is a website with the specific aim of making the earth sciences available to anyone with access to the web. The site only exists because people contribute material to it, but unlike Wikipedia or other similar ventures, we actually care what is there. The site is jam-packed with useful resources for complete beginners, students and professionals alike.

You might notice this is very similar to another talk I gave recently... Hope to see you there!

obviously I can't go but

obviously I can't go but it's a good idea for a discussion.  I don't know if you've ever heard of it or been to it, but I go to www.howstuffworks.com almost everyday to see what new topics they have.  I thought it was a technical site with all information backed up but then I was reading something about geology that was wrong.  I can't remember what it was but I think it had to do with the mantle being liquid or plates floating or something like that.

I'll have a look around for

I'll have a look around for that. I've got something similar to that in the talk already from another site (a video, so it breaks the presentation up nicely!). But I might add another few sites that appear to be reputable and look good, but do give out incorrect information.
Thanks!

Good luck at lunchtime

Good luck at lunchtime Jon,you are of course correct about the amount of misinformation floating around the web.I came to this site the get the answers to my questions from the horses mouth as it were.Perhaps far too many people are confusing wiki and google with having a real education

I hope the talk went well.

I hope the talk went well. It's also nice to see a bit of shameless plugging for GeologyRocks!
