Talk on GeologyRocks

I'm giving a talk on GeologyRocks and public engagement in Earth Sciences on the 31st of October in Edinburgh. The talk will be in the Grant Institute at around 5pm. I'll post more details later (when I have them) and the talk will be placed on the website after the event.

If you're around Edinburgh then, please do come along!

The web is a wonderful place. You can access it 24/7 on any device from a mobile phone, to a games console to top-of-the range quad-core desktop machine with gigabytes of RAM. One of the objectives of the World Wide Web is to give free and unfettered access to the whole sphere of human knowledge. Can you really do this? What does the average person see when they search for terms that you and I as earth scientists take for granted? This talk is a whistle-stop tour of the best, worst and downright ugliest of the web for an earth science point of view. The problem of skewed, biased or blatantly wrong content is exacerbated by the advent of web 2.0: now anyone can publish anything, not just those with technical knowledge. Despite some of the questionable science available, there is hope! GeologyRocks is a website with the specific aim of making the earth sciences available to anyone with access to the web. The site only exists because people contribute material to it, but unlike Wikipedia or other similar ventures, we actually care what is there. The site is jam-packed with useful resources for complete beginners, students and professionals alike.
