Points and Ranks

GeologyRocks uses a system of points and ranks to encourage users to contribute to the site.

Points are awarded for submitting various types of contents and simply participating. The following points are awarded:

  • Blog entry: 2 points
  • Forum topic: 1 point
  • Submitting an image: 5 points
  • Posting a poll: 1 point
  • Submitting a link: 5 points
  • Submitting an article: 50 points
  • Submitting aword definition for the glossary: 5 points
  • Submitting a tutorial: 100 points
  • Commenting on any node: 1 points
  • Inviting a new member (points awarded once member signs up): 2 points
  • Posting a news story: 2 points

Points are awarded when the material is submitted. However, your material may not be accepted (the reasons why will be explained to you) and the points will be subtracted.

So what's the point in points? As you aquire points, you move our ranking system which is based on Moh's Hardness scale. The scale is:

  • Talc: <50 points
  • Gypsum: 50-100 points
  • Calcite: 100-250 points
  • Fluorite: 250-500 points
  • Apatite: 500-1000 points
  • Feldspar: 1000-1500 points
  • Quartz: 1500-2500 points
  • Topaz: 2500-3500 points
  • Corundum: 3500-5000 points
  • Diamond: >5000 points
  • ?

As you move up the ranks your picture associated with the rank will change. You will also get the chnace to earn some prizes! When you reach Feldspar you will receive a GeologyRocks mug, mousemat or magnetic sign. When you reach Diamond you will receive a GeologyRocks T-shirt or sweatshirt along with some exclusive GeologyRocks underwear!
