Silicate Hydrolysis

This might seem like an obvious question, but what is it?

I just understood it to be breaking down silicate minerals into clay, but I've been looking through my exam papers and I seem to be expected to write a 30 minute essay answer on it, which worries me somewhat. I don't think I can write slow enough to make that sentance last for half an hour!

You don't seem to be getting a response Sarah, and I'm possibly not the best person to give you an answer (all practical, no theory), but as I understand it, silicate hydrolysis is part of a progressive breakdown of minerals rich in silica into clays. I suggest you try a google search on the subject because I'm a bit out of my depth on it.

Thanks Gus.

I've sat the exam now, so I just hope that what I wrote was enough!

Sorry I was a bit late with what little information I could provide. Good luck with the result though.

That's alright.
I think it went ok. I'll let you know when I get my results in June.
(Or possibly not June, if all the lecturers strike and don't mark it.)
