KRAKATAU
Sun, 01/29/2006 - 08:57Hi John,
Sounds like a good read. I think it was Simon Winchester who wrote the bok about William Smith. I found the language in that a little pompous, but still enjoyed it. Thanks for the review ![]()
Here's a link to Amazon if people like the sound of the book:

In which direction must you travel to get to Krakatoa from Java?
It's actually west of Java, but the film makers decided it would sound more exotic if they put "East" in the title. This is apparently true. Artistic license, or something. Anyway, the film was sh**e.

Fri, 02/03/2006 - 21:02I think the point is that.... first there is a mountain, then there is no mountain... ----- cue for a song perhaps???
Krakatau disappeared in fragments - 6 cubic miles of dust and rubble.
I don't think we should placer too much creedance on Gus's East of Java. (I do hear he gets lost on field trips!)

Mon, 02/06/2006 - 08:55Don't stop John. Some are very amusing. Emphasis on word "some" though. Can't send any back at the moment as:
a) Nobody else sends them to me so I can't forward them
and
b) I haven't got hours to waste trawling the internet for laffs.
Cheers

Thu, 02/09/2006 - 23:58Just because I choose to write and send at 5 a.m doesn't mean you have to get up and read themat 5 a.m. They don't ave 'sell by dates'. So just to show there are no hard feelings - and to show how versitile I am I decided to send this one at midnight.

Fri, 02/10/2006 - 08:36That's cleared up a mystery. I thought that posts disappeared after a few minutes so I've spent the last three years permanently hooked up to my PC, suffering from caffeine overload for nothing. And I might send back the Getyourcomputerriggedtoyouralarmclock (TM) that the guy in the dodgy suit sold me. Oh, I feel so daft for having been led up the garden path like that. :?

I really enjoyed this book, once I got used to Winchesters style of writing, which might be described as slightly old fashioned. I would have been happy with an account of the 1883 Krakatau eruption, but this book gave much more.
It describes the fauna and flora around the area, the history of the Dutch East India Company (VOS), and a short history of the telegraph system. There is a certain amount of plate tectonics theory, which I feel that even a non geologist would understand, earlier eruption ( which I wasn't aware of!) the build up to the 1883 eruption, the event itself, with wonderful descriptions of the immediate effects and later effects.
It brings the whole thing to a conclusion with what is happening today with Anuk Krakatau ( Son/child of Krakatau) and what may happen in the near future.
All in all a very readable book. Thoroughly recommended.
