Mystery Rock

Ok I have a rock that looks like a metemorphic rock because it has lines, but the thing with it is it doesnt match everything I've looked up. To me it looks like basalt with quartz veins going through it. I cracked it open and it has chrystals.

We'll have to wait until

We'll have to wait until you've managed to get a picture on the site, for this and your other mystery rock. No rush though.

A description of where you

A description of where you found it, neighbouring rock types and more features of the rock itself like texture, etc may be useful, too. you could calculate the density by the simple method of placing it into a bowl of water and measure the difference, etc.

I found it near basalt and greenstone in a creekbed in Illinois.

Hmm...still leaves too many

Hmm...still leaves too many possibilities. I am not familiar with the local geology of Illinois. can you specifiy the location better? whats the next big town or national park?

I am thinking 2 different direction now.

 1. deep see sediments like a radiolarite that has been silified

2. possible greenshist metamorphic rock assemblabes

could you place a foto here? it would be very helpful! Smiling face

can you identify any kind of minerals in your rock?
