HCl for testing for carbonates

Couple of questions, 1) what strength is recommended?

and 2) Where to get it?

IIRC - 10% HCl is good for

IIRC - 10% HCl is good for the carbonates.  The times that I needed it, I got the HCl from a university lab (I don't need much) with permission, of course, and dilute it to about 10% with water.  You can buy HCl from a chemistry store, but it usually comes by the gallon, which I can't use.

Whatever you do, don't

Whatever you do, don't follow the example of some from my mapping trip at uni!

In deepest darkest northern Spain some people ran out of dilute HCl (there was some dolomite in the area but not that much). They went to the chemists to get some more and thought they were being very clever in ordering it by just writing down '100ml HCl' however they forgot to specify the strength and got the concentrated variety!! I understand that their maps showed a LOT of limestone! Smiling face
