How magnetic is magnetite?

Hi there,

I have to confess I'm not a geologist but I have a geology question. I have bought some magnetite on-line as a prop for an educational project I'm helping out with on physics (we're discussing electromagnetism). The rocks don't appear to be magnetic at all - they don't attract paperclips or any other metal objects I can find.

Can anyone tell me just how magnetic is magnetite supposed to be - I want to know if I've been scammed or if magnetite is just only really weakly magnetic.

Any help or advice you can offer would be great. Thanks

Louise Ellender

Hmmm...I thought a lump of magnetite should be able to pick up a paperclip. If you have a compass handy, try moving around the magnetite - does the needle move?

Some magnetite might not be that magnetic so you may havea "duff" lump. Rather than buy a new bit - magnetise it yourself, no one will know Winking

Magnetite the size of a toenail is magnetic enough to move steel nail and to interact with a compass.
