Pyroclastic Flow

  • Location: Tenerife, Canary Islands.
  • Date Taken (dd-mm-yy): 23-03-2006

Alternating phonolitic pumice (light) and basaltic scoria (dark) layers. The scoria is from nearby cinder cones, having travelled no great distance, and the pumice is from Montana Blanca in the caldera several km away. It can travel much greater distances due to the higher explosivty of the eruptions and its low weight.
