This is a view of Giant's Causeway from a nearby cliff. Giant's Causeway is the result of Tertiary volcanic activity. There are three periods of activity in the area; the lower, middle and upper flows. The columns occur in the middle flow. They are mainly hexagonal, but can be up-to eight-sided, and a re a result of rapid cooling of the lava. See The Official Guide for more informaiton.
