Journeys into the Ring of Fire
Thu, 09/14/2006 - 07:53My telly's on the blink (I think the hamster needs replacing), so I haven't seen the programmes. I'm curious to know what the 10 Things I Didn't Know About Volcanoes are. Actually there's probably more than ten things I didn't know, but it's a start.

Thu, 09/14/2006 - 13:43Was that Camaroon incident the one where carbon dioxide pooled up at the bottom of the lake, then one night it turned over and released all the gas? Then because it was a calm night and the CO2 is a little more dense, it just sat near the ground but contained by the crater, and all the people living in the village died of CO2 poisoning? Heard about that in one of my classes last semester.

Yep, that was the one, I think it's called Lake Nyos.
BTW Surtsey is another of the volcanoes featured in the programme.

Thu, 09/14/2006 - 22:44Evening everybody!
Well KU40, this is one of the problems which suffer people living in the Balkans area, today. There are a lot of Mud-volcanoes, giving out CO2, and other kind of dangerous gases.
The point is... people usually know where they live. I mean, sometimes, cities, villages, hamlets, are being built in streamely dangerous places, all because, ...firstly, there aren´t another places to live, there is no money, or because volcanic areas usually are very fertile (and they achieve a survival economy in this places with agriculture and stockbreeding).
Nowadays, in my Country, IGN (Instituto Geográfico Nacional) have created a volcanic vigilance network to monitoring the Canary Islands volcanic activitie (for example Teide´s vigilance network which include, seismicity, geochemistry and gravity surveys). Civil Defense Organization prepare the new evacuation models, with the IGN coordination that makes people feel safe above all. You know, safety first!!.

Mon, 09/18/2006 - 03:27Episode 3 of Journeys into the Ring of Fire is repeated Monday...at 3.25 am!!!! Seeing as I missed episode 3, and don't have a VCR anymore, I'm gonna have to wake up at 3.15 to watch it or plead with my grandad to tape it (he won't, coz he is taping sport 24/7). Good job I only work afternoons....

Wed, 10/18/2006 - 18:28I did go somewhere once and I liked it but when I got home I realised that actually I detested it.
London and the US are just special cases, I live in Cornwall which is an economic backwater which is a playground for the rich in London.
I agree with Gus, St Austell isn't that bad, aparently five people were seen in the town at the same time last saturday. Wow.

Fri, 10/20/2006 - 14:51At the moment, Kos is the best place ever! I love it here! Volcanic springs, hot weather, interesting rock formations, Nissyros volcano - heaven!
But there's just one thing. I'm seriously suffering from being unable to obtain a decent cup of tea. Agghhh!
Apart from that, I'm having a fab time!
The airport amused me greatly. Apparently it runs itself. Apart from one old guy who checks your passport, there seemed to be zero people working there. Passengers were freely wandering airside, inbetween planes (only 5 planes at the whole airport btw). Amusing and worrying!

Sat, 11/04/2006 - 16:08Theres only one good thing in Lancashire and that is the road into Yorkshire. (and I'm so glad the National Railway Museum wasn't built in Lancashire).

I saw a poster yesterday advertising a "Yorkshire breakfast". It was sausage and eggs, topped with a Yorkshire pudding.....

Wed, 11/08/2006 - 23:38My uncle (born in Bradford) says the best thing about Yorkshire is that there is more than one Yorkshire - north, south, etc.
And also the best thing about Lancashire and Yorkshire(s) is that they're in the north of England. For some reason, my uncle dislikes southern folk!
BTW, I found this on youtube and it made me laugh loads.

Wed, 11/22/2006 - 16:13"because, if it's not in Yorkshire, it's not worth visiting!"
This saying is a result of collusion between all world authorities in an attempt to try and get yorkshire folk to stay within the confines of the Yorkshire border.
The phrase is of corse a blatent lie but we wouldn'twant anyone in yorkshire to know that.

Submitted by Volcanogirl on Wed, 09/13/2006 - 23:05.Did anyone watch this? I loved all four programmes, especially as they were presented by my hero Dr Iain Stewart! I liked the first episode best, when he was in Indonesia.
Also he presented another programme called 10 Things you didn't know about Volcanoes, which was really interesting for a volcano nut like me.
