Could be flint - we get

Could be flint - we get similar pebbles round here (Brighton) - where was the beach you found it on? Also, do you feel like breaking a bit off so we can see what it is like inside?

My guess is some form of

My guess is some form of re-mineralisation of calcite. Does it scratch with your nail (or about the same kind of hardness). Given it's from a beach in Northumberland, I'm guessing it's part of the carboniferous sequence there - lots of sandstone and limestone. It could even be the eroded remains of a bit of coral.

This is the problem with eroded pebbles! They could be anything!

Geologists are gneiss!!
