Obviously I disagree with
Mon, 07/07/2008 - 12:56Obviously I disagree with advertising on these pages but for mapping/field equipment GeoSupplies in Sheffield are pretty good - at least in terms of range, not sure about price.

Regarding pen sizes, my advice would be to get at least one 0.1mm pen for writing notes/dip&strike onto your map. Experience has taught me you can never write small enough because I guarantee all the complicated/interesting bits will occur within 100m of each other. And that they'll be next to a landfill/sewerage farm/tip or some other unpleasant place to be...anyway enjoy your trip! ![]()
PS: No, I don't have shares in GeoSupplies
A word of warning
Wed, 07/09/2008 - 19:16A word of warning if you take technical pens, make sure they are empty of ink before you travel or the pressure differences will make them leak everywhere. Technical pens do give the best results but do clog and take spares of your main size for different ink colours and the risk of bending a nib.
Back in the day (over a quarter of a century ago now!) I used an old fashioned dip nib pen for my mapping. I can still remember the nib type - a Gillott 291 mapping nib. Never clogs and you can change the ink colour in a second! Does need a bit of practice getting used to though.

Technical Pens for mapping
Submitted by Crank on Sun, 07/06/2008 - 18:47.Rigwit, I'm off to spain for a mapping project and have been told I need a 0.25 technical pen for mapping, fortunatley as my dad is an architect he has given me a big bunch of them.
Although, I've been told not to use propper technical pens (eh?) but to use cheap ones etc. Thing is, these take india ink and apparently clog up in the field, so in an attempt to save what is left of my student overdraft, should I risk taking these, which just so happen to be very nice staedtler mars matic pens, 4 of. Or should I go off and spend some cash on ones that will only last 5min?
P.s. any idea on sizes worth taking? Im thinking .25, .35 and .70.
