some help IDing a rock

seems to be about 1.5 to 2 times the weight of a typical rock of the same size. doesn't seem to be magnetic. seems to be harder than a typical rock. leaves a blackish steak.

Looks a little like

Looks a little like goethite, but I think I'll guess that it's pyrolusite, because of the streak.

I'm an amature though, so please wait for confirmation from someone with more experience like John or Gus.

Nice specimen! Did you find it?

Edit : I'm not feeling good about pyrolusite either.... Not sure what it is.

It looks like pyrite and the

It looks like pyrite and the blackish streak would confirm that.  It would help to know where it came from because it may be a pyritized fossil such as an ammonite.

I'd say pyrite as well, but

I'd say pyrite as well, but coukd be (perhaps) classed as marcasite, which is still iron sulphate.  Need to see it closer.

Yeah. If you can find a

Yeah. If you can find a Victorian jeweller who has a Victorian lady customer.  Fashioned into a brooch it would probably sell for about £3 14s 5d 3farthings - in the currency of the day of course.  Since the average wage would have been about 10/- a week it was quitea valuable prize.

Unfortunately, today, you couldn't give it away.

Glad to help, but I'm not a 'sir'.  The Queen forgot to put my name on the honours list last year.

We've had a chat about it and I've forgiven her of course, and she has promised to try and remember to knight me for next year.

Meanwhile I'll stay just plain Dr Quartz.
