Christmas list
Tue, 11/13/2012 - 03:17Being in California, maybe he might take an interest in prospecting or panning for gold?
For around $85 you could get him a year membership to GPAA (Gold Prospectors Association of America). Membership includes access to nation wide GPAA claims (there are several in CA), a gold pan, and some other stuff. Family members are also allowed access on the GPAA claims so the whole family could have fun digging for gold! Rockhounding is allowed on all GPAA claims too so that gives you some access to mine tailings piles that may have specimens. : https://www.goldprospectors.org/Membership/GPAA/tabid/250/Default.aspx
You can find various bags of "paydirt" on the internet. These bags contain a salted amount of gold or gems and minerals that he can sift through and pan to find goodies during the winter months. Let me know if you would like me to recommend any.
A metal detector is probably out of your price range, but would make any guy living near the beach or gold country squeal with joy.
A book on mineral identification, a mohs scale set, and an unglazed ceramic tile come in handy for identifying minerals and aren't too expensive.
Hope this helps spark some ideas!
Get him an online gift
Wed, 11/14/2012 - 08:07Get him an online gift voucher. He might not appreciate the somewhat lazy attitude but at least he can get what he wants. When the kids/grandkids etc ask me what I want for Christmas I always ask for iTunes, Amazon, whatever, so I can buy the sort of extreme heavy metal albums that I want.

Rockhounding Christmas gifts?
Submitted by KashaUK2000 on Mon, 11/12/2012 - 23:45.Hey guys and gals, hope no one minds my asking this here, but thought I'd give it a try.
I'm having a real hard time figuring out what to get my Mr. for Christmas (he's into Jeeps, off-roading, camping, rockhounding, electronics, and other nerdy boy things I largely know little about) - I was thinking if there was anything geology related I could get him given as we're hoping to do more rockhounding together. I'm not 100% what he has already, other than a hammer. He lives in California near LA to give you an idea of what's available for him rockhounding.
I'm looking for ideas, also whether it would be worth my trying to buy him a rock tumbler (he's interested in getting into lapidary), loupe, or a portable UV lamp (he's shown interest in exploring the world of fluoresent minerals) - the issue being that A. I don't know what he might need and say what stength of loupe he'd need, and B. my funds are limited so I'd not be able to get him the best of items, thus he may be best getting these himself. I'd like opinions on whether geology related gifts would be the way to go.
I'd just like to get him something useful, rather than novelty gifts, socks of aftershave. So any help appreciated.
