Paid summer internships

Hi! I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a paid geology intenship? I'm in the penultimate year of my geology degree and after attending a careers talk with shell last week i've statred ta think about doing a geology internship (Probably not with shell though.... apparently they're quite evil..... Had ta barge thru loadsa protesters jus ta get ta d stupid careers talk.... Typical students! Although we did get free food afterwards tho so it's all good!) The problem is, for 6 weeks I have to go do a mapping field trip (Presuming i pass this year n get into my final year that is....) , which we wont be getting any money towards i might add, so i'd only be able to work half the summer.... N off course it would hav to be paid cus i'll be all poor after my mapping experience!!! (actually... as an aside... anyone any suggestions were i should go for my mapping project?? I think i'd like to go abroad.... n apparently it's cheaper ta go abroad too....)  Anywho, any suggestions of websites i should explore or companies i ahould get in touch with would be greatly appreciated!

I am not familiar with your

I am not familiar with your internships rules in england, however, i think you should let us know what kind of specialisation or special interests you have in geology. There can be a variety of alternatives. You could go into mineral exploration and work 3 months in a mining company doing exploration on the field with other geologist ( i did that) or you could work in an engineering company overseeing construction works, helping in stability examinations of soil or you could try to get an internship in the oil/gas industry in reservoir analyses, maturiy work, etc with micropaleontology or sedimentology. Also you could work in a local or country geological survey for some while.

You see...we need to know some about your geology interests. Otherwise there is too much to chose from.

In the UK, oil companies are

In the UK, oil companies are the main internship providers. competition is fierce and applications are needed to be submitted pretty early.

Other sources might be the BGS (Nottingham or Edinburgh) or a museum (though pay would be low to zero). As Mathius said, it depends a lot on what interests you. Let us know and we'll see what we can think of.

Actually I just realised I

Actually I just realised I neglected to mention that i'm studying in Dublin and living here too!! (Silly me...) However I would be interested in working abroad too! Well my favourite subjects at the moment are geophysics and paleobiology, however my university works on a semester programme where i'll be doin completely new subjects after christmas so ther're alot of ares we havent properly covered yet so there are other areas such as structural geology and geotectonics which i think i might like but hav barely any experience of yet. What i do no hawever is i really dont like sedimentology and i'm not keen on geochemistry either. Hope that outlines my interests a bit better!

My fault, should've looked

My fault, should've looked at your profile first! In that case, try the GSI, not BGS Winking

I don't know of any major oil companies that have offices (other than admin or financial) in Dublin. I do know someone at a museum though. She has taken on students in the past, but I'm not sure if they were paid and if so if it was enough to live in Dublin for a summer! That would be palaeo work by the way.

As for geophys, there might be a few options:

  • Exploration company (Edinburgh has a few, don't know about Dublin)
  • Local council or whoever does archaeology there: they might take someone to help with geophys work

The big oil companies option is always there, but do check them out early if you fancy giving that a go.

Oh, and sedimentology is the best subject :p

There are always the

There are always the engineering companies looking for geotechnical engineers/ engineering geologists.

You'd get to work on ground investigations, slope stability, desk studies, various design works (foundations, retaining walls, anchors etc.) so very varied work.

I work for Atkins and I know they do summer internships like this, probably based in Glasgow for our work in Ireland until we get a dedicated geotech office out there. Also many places in Birmingham where I work. Get in touch if you'd like more info on this scheme. Of course I'm sure the other big companies do somehting similar (Mott MacDonald, Arup, Buro Happold, Halcrow - Consultants / Soil Mechanics, Fugro, Norwest Holst - GI Contractors).

Hope this is useful to you.
