Mapping Project

Hi,

I am in my second year of studying at Oxford University for an Earth Sciences degree, and we have to do an independant mapping project as a pair overnext summer. My partner and I are thinking about going to Canada or the United States to map - does anyone here know any good areas to do this, or have any general advice on how to go about planning such an endeavour?

*The area would be about 16 square square kilometres, but this can vary.

*It should take 4-6 weeks to complete.

*Be of reasonable difficulty, so as to gain enough marks in the assessment, eg: NOT layers of shales, but rather a few faults and folds.

*Be of an affordable price.

*Possibly contain igneous AND sedimentary provinces.

*Preferably large amounts of exposure (ie:60%+ would be brilliant)!

Thanks in advance for your help!

John

Never done any geology in

Never done any geology in the States.  Mot my scene I'm afraid.  However I would recommend somewhere near and cheaper - Connimara!  Good exposures, good selection of rock types.  Good pubs.  and excellent company!  And not a McDonalds in sight until you get back to Galway.

Bet you wouldn't regret it!

Just go to Scotland, cheep

Just go to Scotland, cheep hostel, or camp. Perhaps go to Skye? Save cash this way. BOSH it out as quickly as posible. Then you book your flights to Canada, or United States. Vancouver/ California could be fun, and have a sick summer over there! Stress free, where you won't have to look at another rock!
