Help needed in identifying this rock

Wife found this while digging in the flower garden here in west Michigan in the United States.  It is a little smaller than a golf ball.  It's quite light and has a tendency to be brittle especially along the lines that run parallel that appear to partition this stone in about seven layers.  There appear to be other little stones in it too.  The rock overall is black and has a little shine to it and outside of the ridges it's smooth.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

I am leaning toward shale

I am leaning toward shale because of the layers.  And because I would assume shale then not uncommon to find quartz in it. Oil shale?  Thoughts?

No.  It's light.   Sorry about the flash on the camera. Realize now it looks metallic on the photo but I can try to get another photo in daylight if needed.

I am about 50 miles from the nearest edge of a coal basin and about 200 miles from any coal mine which I belive they are abandoned now.  However my guess is that it was transplanted because there was nothing else remotely similar.  Region is mostly clay and gravel.  Probably 20 miles from Lake Michigan.

I was thinking along the lines of a coal as well Gus.  But the brown colouring make me think of peat, but this is a grade up, which is lignite I believe.  I've never handled it, only read about it.
