Geo science potential future student - Pathways

Hey guys,

I am currently planning on taking a Geoscience degree and I was wondering what the best Universities for this area of study are? I am looking at going into the mineral extraction/mining industry as I hear that there is decent money to be made here and that is one of my goals.

I am currently considering applying to Melbourne University (Australia), Auckland University (New Zealand), Canterbury University (New Zealand)(Because I hear that they have an Antarctic exploration trip as part of this degree), and University of British Colombia (Canada). However I have heard that there are some good Universities for this degree in the UK.

Earth science as a whole interests me, and I was wondering what I should specialise in, in order to maximise my potential at successfully getting into a high paying job, or a job with pathways to a high salary. As a side note I am also interested in Palaeontology which I think is also considered a Earth Science? What are the job prospects for this like?

Thank you so much for your time reading this,

 Ben

I deal with A level

I deal with A level students, many of whom go on to uni to read geology.  The feedback I get is that each of their universities is the best.   I supose this is natural loyalty.

They all cover palaeontology  to some extent.

However, what I see of the university towns and cities in UK does not fill me with enthusiasm.  If I were chosing (personal view) I would want one outside of the city such as Bath or Keele, but then (having been born and dragged up in London) I really don't like urban areas.   And of course I am not in the age-group where I simply must be with as many people as possible all the time.  I wouldn't understand most of them!!!!!

Obviously the tops in UK are Oxford and Cambridge.  Certainly Oxford does Earth Science.  Don't know about Cambridge.

I visit Bristol Uni frequently because one of the geology societies meets there.  I like it...... but not for too long.

I go to UCL once a year for the Geologist Association's Festival of Geology and that seems to have quite a good name....but it's London, so I'm out of there very quickly when its finished!  And living in London will cost you an absolute fortune.

I recently did an on-line palaeontology course with the University of Alberta (Canada) but I have never visited.

One thing to beware of - there is little money in Britain for geology, therefore few jobs.  The USGS seems to be the best funded, but even that is decreasing.

Britain is really so small that we've done all our geology!!!!!!
