controversial topics in volcanism?

I'm brand new to this site, so let me introduce myself.  My name is Adam, I'm 22, and I am finishing my late semester of college before recieving my B.S. in Geology.

Currently I am enrolled in an english 201 class (I slacked and forgot to take it, it's a UP required class).  I am required to write a research based argument paper.  I am stuck with the topic of volcanism, because I wrote about the different types of volcanoes in an earlier paper.

Anyways, do you folks know of any theories or controversial ideas about volcanism in general that I could use as a thesis for my paper?  I'm stumped.  If nobody here has any ideas I am going to ask my old petrology prof to see if he can come up with something,

I kind of screwed myself here I think.  I should have chosen an easy topic like gun control!

Maybe their impact on global

Maybe their impact on global warming?  I think I read somewhere that volcanism may have aided a mass extinction.......end of Triassic maybe?  The mud "volcano" (There is a thread in this forum on it) and if it was tripped by oil well drillers or was natural?

Historically the area of

Historically the area of predicting volcanic eruptions has always been a bit of a melting pot, with a general feeling of public mistrust in eruption predictions. There are many examples if you type something like "volcano prediction(s)" into google. There have even been films and various docu-dramas made about the subject.

There are so many aspects involved from exactly how volcanoes should be monitored to specifics about the intrepretation of harmonic tremors that it's difficult not to become involved in heated debate...

The mantle plume controversy

The mantle plume controversy is one I've studied a fair bit. It's definately an interesting one, but can be quite tricky to grasp without some prior knowledge of geophysics and geochemistry. I've been taught neither so I struggled quite a lot in some places. Certainly a good one to do if you're after controversy.

Wow, fast replies, thanks

Wow, fast replies, thanks everyone.  None of those suggestions crossed my mind except the mantle plume theories.  My main worry is finding enough sources (I'm required to have 12), and most of them will have to come from the university library.  I'm actually in Geochemistry right now, 2/3 through the semester, but all we've discussed is the origin of the elements, some organic, and acids and bases?

This english class is really chappin my ass.  It's so dull, I do not enjoy it at all lol.

There's nothing like

There's nothing like resurrecting an old thread, and I don't know if the OP reads the boards anymore but I knew that there was a specific case study I had in mind when I originally replied, and I stumbled across it today, the Armero Tradgedy at Nevado del Ruiz:

Better late than never IMHO! lol.
