I'm not sure what it is,
Mon, 07/30/2012 - 11:05I'm not sure what it is, possibly man-made. The light weight makes me think along those lines. Would you be prepared to knock a bit off one end and take a photo of the exposed material and then we might have a better idea.
I think it could be
Wed, 08/01/2012 - 16:21I think it could be larvikite. The colours you see are the crystals which are not aligned. I believe it is a member of the feldspar family. Used to be used to face banks and public buildings quite a bit, but it started getting expensive (or builders were trying to cut costs).
There is quite a lot in big boulders on the East Coast (of Britain that is). They are using it as sea defences, but it came over from Norway (the only place I know its found) as balast for ships.
It is possible that your piece found its way to the US in the same manner - or it could be local (I don't know the geology of your area).
Certainly what you have there is a break-off which has been tumbled in the surf for some time to be so rounded.
Hope that helps.

Can someone please help to identify this rock?
Submitted by coleel on Sun, 07/29/2012 - 12:53.Hello, I was hoping that someone in this forum could help to identify a rock that was found. It was found on the beach on the Boston, MA shore, it is dark blue with shiny flecks of different colors (blue mostly, with some pink and yellow) on the top and bottom. It is fairly light compared to other rocks its size.
I have attached pictures to this post of it, I've never seen anything like it. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas. Thank you.
