can someone help me on what to do?

i've been all over the intenet trying to find information and i'm hoping that someone can help me on here.

last year is when i first noticed this and it freaked me out.  i had put up an above ground pool and i was backwashing the filter and letting the water run in to the yard.  as the water was seeping in to the ground i heard it trickling underneath like it was raining.  i did it again today and it was doing the same thing.....is this a sink hole.  it makes me a nervous wreck walking over to that area thinking i'm going to get swallowed up!   my grandkids play out there too.   i had a tree around that spot years ago and it died.   there is a small creek about 200ft from my yard dont knowif that has anything to do with it...does anyone know who i can call or what i can do?

Well, I'm a long way from Nashville and the only thing I knew about it was that music comes out of there.  I was totally unaware they had any geology!  Sorry, that was a tongue-in-cheek remark!

Joking aside I think you should get it investigated.  If I lived any closer to Bath that I do and heard that I would run a mile.  Is there any history of mining in your area?

I suggest you contact the United States Geological Survey first.  They may know the answer, or be so interested they will investigate it themselves for free (to you!)

It might be a good idea to contact your local caving club as I think you might have a sinkhole, especially if the geology is limestone.  They will probably have records of any caves which have been explored in your area and any hydrological traces which have been done and will be able to advise you of the best course of action.  Normally there isn't much of a risk if it's a natural feature but you can never be too careful. Usually if there's a stream in close proximity you would expect it to also run underground.

On the other hand, if you suspect it's as a result of mining activity, get it reported straight away as these features have a nasty habit of opening up suddenly, creating a large unstable crater.

The other possibility is that there's a culvert running under the land, in which case it might occasionally get blocked and create a minor inconvenience.
