Can anyone identify this rock?

My wife found this washed up on a beach.  I have never seen anything like it.  Could it possibly be a meteor?  It looks like it is melted on the outside and it is very light.

Oops! I think the photo went missing Winking However, given you said it's light, it's not a meteorite - they're very dense, being mostly iron.

Unfortunately, anything found laying on a beach is incredibly difficult to identify. However, post a photo and we'll see what we can do.

Pitch?

It's the lustre on the broken surfaces I think that gives this one away (and the lightness). It is probably asphalt/pitch/bitumen.

I agree with Hypocentre on

I agree with Hypocentre on this one. Looking at the photograph of the freash surface you can just about make out faint bedding, which at the very least totally rules out a meteor.

It's most likely bitumen, i.e. a high grade coal.
