Can you describe it? You don't have another photo of it from an another side?

It seems to be formed onto basalt. It's on all sides of some some of the rocks I found. It's also only on the out crust of the rocks and range from 1cm circles to 5cm. I only found them on rocks in one area, no other rocks had them.

Would think maybe basalt preformed but it is on all sides of some rocks, as I think basalt would be forming in one direction, these do not, circles ontop, circles on left side and right side. And only seen In the red outer crust of rocks

can you tell us where the rock came from?  It doesn't look like basalt from the photos.  The circles and polygons look to me like fossil corals and I'm wondering if you have a specimen of hematized limestone.

I would go along with a colonial coral fossil as well.  But I'm not sure of the species.

The rocks were found ontop of table mountain in northern califnoria. The whole mountain is basalt

Sometime basalt exhibits polygonal features due to shrinkage when it cooled but the features on your specimen still look like coral.  Is the basalt of Table Mountain a sill?  If that's the case it could have been intruded into sedimentary rocks of which traces could remain above the basalt.

Yes I think it is considered a sill but for some reason I don't think it can be coral. Some of the rocks have large chips which expose rock identical to the basalt which is everywhere up there. The redish color is only about 3 mm deep. Wouldn't coral be coral all the way through? Also there are rocks which display different sized patterns on each side. In fact the rock with smallest shapes also has the largest shapes on the adjacent side. Won't coral tend to demonstrate the same size per coral specamen?  

It's possible that your rock may indeed be basalt which carries a "negative" imprint of corals which were on the underside of a limestone deposit.  If it is all basalt then they are a shrinkage feature I haven't come across before.  have you got photos of any other specimens from the same location for comparison?
