Hi everyone!

Hello all!

I'm a recent master's graduate stuck between a rock and a hard place (excuse the pun). I've been debating one of two options: the first being to bugger off to Australia, get into mining and earn some money. The second being to persue a research career by starting a PhD; which invloves decidedly less money, but perhaps - although not necassarily - a more fullfilling and ultimately rewarding endevour.

I'm not looking for an answer - I know I have to make my own choice - but any advice, experiences, words of wisdom, etc. you might offer may help me make that choice!

Anyway, enough about me... thanks for reading!

If you're not already in

If you're not already in Australia, I'd avoid coming over here until after the US elections in November,
I'm currently working in the resource sector in Perth, WA, and we're being directly effected by the political situation in the states. I know of people that have been here 6 months and still not got a job. However, over on the East coast, where it's all coal and seam gas, there are decidedly more jobs. On the other hand, if you're umming and arring about doing a PhD and you're not sure, then I'd say don't do one. If you wanted to do one, that would be the one and only thing you'd have on your mind. They require your 100% dedication, and if you're not that fussed, the funding allocation could have gone to someone else that really really wanted.

Hope that helps a little

Leah

Hi Pleistocene and welcome

Hi Pleistocene and welcome to GR.

At the risk of sounding like your dad (or even your granddad), it's up to you to decide which direction you want to go in.  The danger with asking for somebody else's advice is that it gives you someone to blame if it doesn't work out the way you wanted it to.  Having said that, I hope whatever it is you decide to do ultimately proves rewarding.  There you go - words of wisdom from an old git.
