Help my 6 Yr old!"

Hi,

I have a 6 yr old daughter who has become obsessed with stones... she collects them from everywhere and is always asking what kind of stones they are ... I have no idea!

Is there somewhere that I can look up a very basic "This is what a stone is" guide.

I'm very keen to encourage her interest in this as it's by far her least destructive one and can only lead onto an interest in education blah blah .... I rashly said I'd take her to the Natural History Museum but suspect that that will be way over both of our heads ....

If any of you guys can remember back to "my first stone collection" I'd be grateful for any tips on keeping her interest up by not being too complicated (she's just 6 and loves Spongebob too!)!

many thanks in advance

For kids

Visit www.rocksforkids.com as a starting point. There are many other places devoted to minerals and rock basics for kids.

Is there still some

Is there still some 'Observers Guide to...' series being published? Or something by Dorling Kindersley?

I would suggest seeing if

I would suggest seeing if there's someone local who can take you and your daughter out for the day.  If you live in Cornwall I'd be happy to do so.  The problem with visiting museums and looking at books is that they show you some of the best specimens and that's not what you're likely to find out in the field.

Many thanks for all your

Many thanks for all your suggestions ... I think Gus is spot on with Museums giving unrealistic specimens (books tend to do the same) ... the truth is I'm quite interested in where just regular stones in a field come from ! ... I'll give local organizations a try ..

thanks again

Alan
