Greetings from Barrow-in-Furness

I always wanted to learn more about geology and have never got around to it until now.  Too busy being a computer dogsbody and trying to write crime fiction and get it published, I expect.  However, living close to the Lake District as I do there's a lot to be curious about, and even more on my local beach where there is a rich assortment of pebbles to get to know.  Notably some rather beautiful rose-pink granite.

What I was looking for was a good introductory book, which wouldn't be too basic.  A book which would tell me more about those pebbles and their behaviour would be very nice too.
