Excited about geology

Hello my name is Elaine. I was interested in geology at school but never did anything about it. Recently became interested again watching Earth Story on TV. Bought the DVD and have watched it several times (all episodes) in the three weeks I’ve had it. Even as I write this the repeats are on the TV and I can see the stromatolites in Australia over the top of my laptop. I contacted the local geological society and was advised to join the geological trust as the society would be too academic. So my application form has gone off.

Decided to set myself a learning programme but there was so much info I was flying around the web onto all sorts of different subjects through all the links in every subject. So decided to start at the beginning of geological time (well actually before geological time at the Hadean Eon) and work forward. Want to dash home very night to get logged on and learn more. Work colleagues think I’m strange but have started asking questions which is fun as I have to get the answer for the next day if I don’t know.

I’ve always had an affinity with mountains but over the last few weeks as I have learnt more about them my love for them has grown immensely.

I have finally found an interest I’m passionate about and feel all I want to do is work in geology but I’m 52 (a very young 52 but still 52) and would be too old to do a degree (even if I could afford it) then gain employment. So I’d love to perhaps work assisting a geologist or anything that would let me get out there and learn as I go.

I’m so excited about learning and am so pleased to have found this site. I’m  sure it will be a great help.

If you are looking for an

If you are looking for an easy to understand introductory book I can recommend "Understanding Earth" by Press & Siever. A big but excellent beginners book well worth the money IMHO. If you want to know more about the history of earth then "Earth System History" (historical geology) by Stanley might also give you want you want to know for starters. Most big and well sorted bookshops should have these too in their collection to take a look before buying. They are pretty expensive over here in Germany though but almost every good student has their German translation in their bookshelf.

Understanding Earth

Mathias, Thanks for the information. I'll certainly get both books. I've found the websites for both subjects too and they look really useful.
