Not sure about the local sands of Kent...however, there are standard sieves.

You can even get machines to shake the sieves too!

I am trying to locate a good local sand to make a historic lime mortar. The local sands in Kent are dark brown/orange and not suitable for light mortars (the ones I make look tangerine when dry).
Historically builders would have sourced sand locally (typically sharp and well-graded with fines through to about 5mm), I'm puzzled where they would have obtained this sand a few hundred years ago.
Some local pits do a pale yellow "silica" sand, but it is way too fine and uniformly graded to be used on its own.
Also I'm interested in investing in a set of sieves to grade local sands myself, in order to mix to correct the correct grade. I've seen graphs and wonder if there are a standard set of sieve sizes to grade and clasify aggregates.
Cheers
