It seems a little more than the genuine curiosity about a single mineral/rock/fossil found whilst out and about that most ID queries concern!
I'd suggest a hand-lens, a notebook and a beginners guide to rock identification. I'll admit that ID-ing random rocks for no reason can seem a little boring but it does build to a bigger picture.
And think yourself lucky. As part of my 1st year course we had to sketch the sedimentary features in the paving slabs in the local shopping centre (Borrowdale Volcanics - very cool), that was moderatley embarassing. It did get better when we had to ID the rock from which the bar was made in the local pub, you have no idea how many pints that took!

Wed, 03/11/2009 - 17:37Fair enough if it's a bit of coursework you need to do for a module you don't intend to persue any further.
Just remember that if you have an exam on this stuff which requires you to ID rocks/minerals/fossils then this approach won't help a great deal.
