What makes you think there might be gold in your lump of quartz?

It could possibly be gold,
Sun, 12/23/2012 - 07:57It could possibly be gold, although it would be very 'rich' if you can see flakes like that. It is economical to extract gold if there is 5 gms per tonne - a tiny amount. This is why there are so many offers to buy old mobile phones (at rediculously low prices). A tonne of those would have nearly 20 grms of gold in, plus some other precious metals.
Other things which would 'sparkle' like that are mica, pyrite, chalcopyrite and a few other non valuable minerals.
Are you in an area noted noted for gold?

Submitted by Snorge on Sat, 12/22/2012 - 12:58.I'm new to this site and only learnt basic geology: I've found a large piece of quartz in my yard and I was wondering what I could do with it. Apparently it could have gold in it. If it does how do I find out? I tried the iodine test but I don't think I carried it out well enough at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks
