Quartz

I'm new to this site and only learnt basic geology: I've found a large piece of quartz in my yard and I was wondering what I could do with it. Apparently it could have gold in it. If it does how do I find out? I tried the iodine test but I don't think I carried it out well enough at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Having answered another of

Having answered another of your posts I then come across this one.

What makes you think there might be gold in your lump of quartz?

It could possibly be gold,

It could possibly be gold, although it would be very 'rich' if you can see flakes like that.   It is economical to extract gold if there is 5 gms per tonne - a tiny amount.  This is why there are so many offers to buy old mobile phones (at rediculously low prices).  A tonne of those would have nearly 20 grms of gold in, plus some other precious metals.

Other things which would 'sparkle' like that are mica, pyrite, chalcopyrite and a few other non valuable minerals.

Are you in an area noted noted for gold?
