Please help identify this rock

This thing has been in my family for over 50 years, i figured I would finally take the time to figure out what it is, it is light, approx 1lb. 8oz. and here are a couple pictures... please let me know what you think, some kind of volcanic rock? it was found in southeastern Virginia, USA approx. 1950.

Looks like pumice or scoria.

Looks like pumice or scoria. Those are volcanic rocks. They form when magma depressurizes and cools very quickly, during a volcanic eruption. All the dissolved gasses bubble up like when you open a fizzy drink, then the lava sets, freezing the bubbles in place.

I suspect from the colour and apperance that it's scoria but I'm not sure. Pumice is very light and floats, while scoria is much heavier and doesn't. Drop it in the bath, see what it does. Then you'll know for sure.
