I'm new here. I've been studying geology for a bit. I'm a writer and what I want is to create more believable settings. So I came on here to see if I could get some help / ideas on a planet I've been trying to create. I think it's kind of fun- maybe you will, too.
It's a small? planet (or moon?), rich in some sort of as yet unnamed valuable mined resources.
Noxious atmosphere.
Safe for human beings to settle there, but requires some sort of dome.
Very hot core(?)- geothermal energy is used to power a modern city and everything in it.
Clean water, maybe deep underground
A cave system (also filled with water) - caves run through much of the continent and it's unstable. The city is built near the mines on a part of the continent that is most stable
The inhabitants experience tremors, and eventually massive earthquakes- they've built the city to withstand some of it, but not all of it. The earthquakes are getting worse.
I've read that geothermal energy is best accessed along tectonic plates... so perhaps there in a mountain range nearby? If there is water, would there probably also be life on the planet (algae, mushrooms, that sort of thing?)Would the caves be cold or would there be hot springs and warm caves so close to the heat source they are tapping? Is it even plausible that a small world is riddled with both caves, has a hot core and provides sufficient energy, and has resources located near the plates? If there are caves accessible from inside the dome and probably also exits outside of the dome, would the air in the caves also be totally unbreathable? Would the soil be likely to support life if people had the right technology and plants to grow for food? The tremors mean.. volcano? What is the progression of tremors to earthquakes to... along a plate? What other questions am I missing here?
