Colour of clay

Hi all

I live in the High Weald area of Sussex which is well know for its clay.  The clays in my garden are different colours; yellow, grey, white and even red/pink.  Can anyone tell me whether this is due to the presence of a particular mineral (i.e is a specific mineral responsible of a specific colour of clay?)

Cheers

Andrew

Clay Colour

Andrew,

The colour is largely due to different iron minerals. Haematite is red and limonite yellow for example.
