Rock from the Island of Crete

Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this rock I found while snorkeling at the shores of Island of Crete. It looked like nature’s own art so I kept it. I appreciate any comments, take care Kari

Hi An interesting piece of

Hi

An interesting piece of rock you've got there. I think it's a piece of gabbro (the mottled stuff) which is attached to basalt which is normally blackish but has been bounced about a bit. Cyprus is a classic location for studying what are known as ophiolite complexes which is where a piece of mid-ocean ridge gets pushed up over other deposits during continental collision. If I'm correct about your specimen (and there may well be others on the forum who have a different opinion), it represents a little bit of a magma feeder from which lava flowed onto the sea bed millions of years ago.

My initial thought on seeing

My initial thought on seeing it was a matrix supported conglomerate, but I now think Gus is right.  Additionally it has broken off and been tumbled naturally eith in a river, or more like (for Crete) in the sea to gove the well rounded appearance.

Thank You

Gus/John

Thank you both for your prompt replies and evaluation of the rock. It did look to my eyes that darker color rock in molten state had covered the lighter color rock and some gravel got stuck in it and after solidification water shaped it. But metals are my business not rocks. I’m just a petty talcum guy. Hope you have a great day.
