Could this be a basalt, it's slightly magnetic.

however, the place we went consists of limestone, conglo, mudrocks, shales only.. could a basalt exist in this area??

Sorry, couldn't see the pic but basalt can occur as an intrusion into the bedding, ie a sill. This could happen after the rocks were formed or whilst they are deposited.

Oh i see now. Thanks. The texture in that rock is very fine-grained, however. could it be a mudstone stained with hematite only?
