Truro College Trip
Tue, 09/26/2006 - 11:21Trip went well. Got thoroughly drenched and narrowly avoided seeing an old bloke get pulled over the lip of an open shaft by the dog he insisted on bringing along. Same old bloke offered to buy everyone a pint at the local but I vetoed it because we'd never get out again. That's a first - me refusing anything.
By the way, there's another trip on the 15 October - Wheal Busy, Unity Wood and Killifreth Mines. Come on, there's a good calciner.

Hi Volcanogirl.
They're supposed to be for the college but they're free to members of GeologyRocks. Just send me a private message and I'll get back to you with contact details.

Mon, 10/02/2006 - 08:00Gus - 'scus my ignorance - but what is a 'calciner'?
It's a type of furnace which is used to roast ores, particularly tin, in order to reduce it to a form suitable for buddling. An important byproduct was arsenic which was collected in long winding flues called labyrinths. In Cornwall there's several examples of mid 19th century Brunton Calciners which featured a large iron revolving plate.

Submitted by Gus Horsley on Thu, 09/14/2006 - 12:02.I know it's slightly short notice but I've got a field trip lined up for the 24th September which is to Old Wheal Jane, Great Consolidated, United and Poldice Mines - lots of specimens, industrial archaeology, even a bit of wildlife. It's for Truro College but free for members of GeologyRocks, a saving of £20!!!! Meet in the college car park at 10:00. If you want further details, etc, send me a private message and I'll give you my phone number, or just roll up on the day.
Cheers
