Mt. St. Helens Lava Tube trip

Some friends and I explored the 2000 year old Basaltic lava tubes at the south flanks Mt St Helens. Known as the Ape caves. We hiked and climbed for more than 2.25 miles underground seeing Lavacicle's, and the hard but bridle solidified lava of the tubes floor. We even had to climb a 8 to nine foot lava fall. At points the tube opened into huge room maybe 50ft a crossed and 30ft high.

Basalt is not common in my neck of the world, Andesite, Dacite and Tephra are most common in our arc range. Tubes location 46° 6'36.07"N/122°12'42.37"W

al8301,

Yeah it was fun! I also have a permit to enter the crater of Helen's next summer 2011.
Its been my dream to stand on the lava dome scenes I was a kid.
I was 4 years old  in 1980 when I saw helen's erupted and lived only 50 miles away from her. I have been obsessed with volcano's (mainly helen's) scenes then.
