Geological Must Sees!

I'm about to get my driving license and some wheels in the near future and I was wondering if anyone can point me too some intresting sites on mainland Britain.
I'm hoping to make it a road trip of sorts.

Well I live in the North

Well I live in the North East.
And in terms of intrest...anything really, strange rock formations, decent fossil hunting grounds, intresting rocks/minerals for collection and anything that is a "must" visit.

1) Siccar Point -

1) Siccar Point - Devonian/Silurian unconformity made famous by James Hutton. It's like a Mecca for geologists, so this should be no. 1 stop Winking

2) Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh - Carboniferous volcano, some nice sedimnetary stuff too

3) Whitby Area (Ravenscar is best for fossils) - Classic Jurassic sedimentation and lots of fossils. Scarborough even has some dino footprints (see the articles section).

4) There's some nice Carb-Perm reefs near Newcastle (can't remember exactly where, but there in one of my notebooks somewhere)

5) Pease bay, Barns Ness - Devonian river sediments and carboniferous reefs respectively

6) Flamborough Head - classic chalk sequences

7) Boston Castle, Rotherham - Rotherham Red sandstone which shows classic river deposits (and is my 1st field work site)

8) Castleton and Mam Tor - carboniferous reef and modern landslip

9) Dobbs Linn, Scottish Border - graptolite heaven

10) Greater Oolite in N. Yorkshire - great fossils (around York - Whitby kind of area).

That lot do you? I've tried to stick to NE localities, rather than those I know in Dorset & Devon Smiling face

Don't think I'd have

Don't think I'd have produced such a comprehensive list as that Jon.  Out of my area of course - thats my excuse!!!!

But  you did forget fluorite in Weardale. Still bits laying around if you find the right places - and its not that big!

Just the advantage of having

Just the advantage of having a geology-based degree from Edinburgh - you do a lot of field work around there! I've never been to Weardale though and from my list you can tell I'm a sedimentologist Winking

Arthur's Seat is there -

Arthur's Seat is there - that's igneous. Sedimentary rocks are far more interesting anyway

North East sites

I'd recommend the bay North of Dunstanburgh Castle near Craster/Embleon.  Wave like igneous layers in a stunning setting., especially in/after a storm  Drive to Embleton (park next to the golf course) and walk about 1 mile south towards the castle.

I know it's not the mainland

I know it's not the mainland but the isle of Staffa, off the West coast of Scotland, is absolutely amazing: lots of columnar jointing.  Every geology enthusiast should see it. :-)  Plenty of puffins there too!

I know this reply is coming

I know this reply is coming years after your original post, but still, if you fancy a trip somewhere, South Stack lighthouse in Anglesey has some interesting geology surrounding it!

Indeed, but not just South

Indeed, but not just South Stack.  You could spend a weekjust having very quick looks at various parts of Anglesey.  There really is a lot there.

However we haven't heard from this Triffidstalk for a couuple of years so don't know if he has yet passed his test and is still into geology.
